      <image:title>Home - Spencer Morton</image:title>
<image:caption>Spencer was an accomplished athlete, talented guide/mentor, successful entrepreneur, passionate conservationist, and devoted husband and father. Upon graduating from the University of Vermont in 2005, with a degree in Fisheries Management, Spencer set out to pursue a career as a fly-fishing guide. Spencer decided to make his home in Jackson Hole, which he considered one of the world’s premier trout fisheries. He was recognized as one of the premier fly-fishing guides in the Rocky Mountain West and was awarded “Top Wyoming Guide” honors at the prestigious Jackson Hole One Fly Tournament in 2012 and 2013. However, the desire to share his knowledge and experience with others drove him to form the Jackson Hole Fly Fishing School in 2013 with the mission to make fly fishing fun and accessible. Over the years, Spencer led the charge to help thousands of students along their fly-fishing journey, while creating lifelong friends along the way. Whether he was skiing the backcountry in the Teton Mountains, hunting elk, or chasing his favorite game-fish species, Spencer had an infectious personality that forged friendships wherever he went. We thank you Spencer for making the world a better place. Our deepest condolences go out to his amazing wife Melissa and his fearless son Fritz. - Tom Evenson, Orvis Endorsement Programs Manager</image:caption>

      <image:title>Spencer's Love - Gone but not forgotten</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s with a heavy heart that we share the news that we lost our friend and Jackson Hole Fly Fishing School (JHFFS) founder, John Spencer Morton. Spencer died of heart complications here in Jackson Hole on May 10, 2021. Spencer didn’t necessarily like the limelight but found himself there often. Driven by a competitive spirit, he could do anything — fly fishing and hockey were just the sports he did and loved the most. In the words of a good friend, “Spencer was the humblest show pony you’ve ever met.” He had the kind of humility that ran from the inside out. His skill went beyond instinct or technique. For Spencer it was about chasing perfection, knowing the chase is really what it’s all about. He had focus, drive, and a gentle way of kindness. Spencer made friends everywhere he went. To know him was to love him. What Spencer’s many accolades as an angler won’t tell you is the love he put into this school. His love will live on through everything we do. JHFFS will stay its course, and we’ll continue to find ourselves gathering at the Schoolhouse on the Snake. We will continue to guide and cast the vision of JHFFS. And with more focus than ever, we will carry on Spencer’s legacy for our Jackson Hole community. See you on the Snake. “There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of mind.” – Washington Irving</image:caption>
